FAQ – Vivarium

If you are thinking about taking an exotic pet into your home then Herpetology is something you may need to study beforehand to give you a more detailed insight into the habits and living conditions of reptiles and amphibians.

Once you have decided which exotic pet is right for you and your home, the next step is to find the perfect habitat – such as a vivarium.

What is a Vivarium?

The name Vivarium comes from the Latin work “Vivere” which translates to “Live or place of life”. Usually made of glass or a combination of wood and glass a Vivarium is essentially a container or tank used to house reptiles, amphibians or plants.  These days many manufactures make their Vivariums to look more like a piece of furniture than a reptile enclosure, so they fit perfectly into every home.

Are Vivariums suitable for all exotic pets?

Vivariums come in a whole range of different shapes and sizes and so they are suitable for most types of reptiles and amphibians, however, your exotic pet specialist will be able to advise you if a vivarium is right for your particular pet.

How do I connect heating and lighting equipment to a Vivarium?

Most vivariums today are delivered flat packed and ready to build with just a screwdriver.  With pre-cut holes for heating and lighting equipment and integrated ventilation systems, these unique structures have been specifically designed for exotic pets to live in and therefore have all the necessary cable access points.

How do I access my vivarium for cleaning?

Depending on the vivarium you choose, you will have sliding glass doors across the front or an opening roof for easy access.  The wooden vivariums in the VivExotic collection all feature sliding toughened glass doors, which provide perfect access for feeding and cleaning.

Where is the best place to position my Vivarium?

A vivarium should be placed in a secure environment where it is not likely to be bumped into, knocked or subjected to any loud noises or vibrations (such as next to a TV).  Ideally, a vivarium should be raised off the ground onto a vivarium cabinet and placed in a room away from draughts, heaters and direct sunlight.  Your exotic pet specialist will be able to give you further advice.

Many say that reptiles and amphibians are becoming one of the most popular pets in the UK today, and with the right care and living environment, you can get to enjoy the true beauty of these exotic creatures in your home.

Keeping Rabbits – Part 2.

We hoped you enjoyed the first part of our rabbit guide yesterday.

We have three more topics to cover, and today we will take a look at a Rabbits Natural Behaviour, Companions and Health.

Natural Behaviour

Rabbits are highly social creatures that love to interact with other rabbits as well as many humans.  Requiring frequent exercise, rabbits need to be able to run around and stretch their legs so it is our responsibility to provide them with a large rabbit hutch, an exercise run, and whenever possible a large garden or open space for them to run and jump around in.

Rabbits need a space to hide, if they are feeling vulnerable or scared they like to retreat into a darkened space, so always ensure your rabbit hutch comes complete with an enclosed sleeping area.

Access to this sleeping area, in addition to some mentally stimulating toys, food, water and toilet areas will allow your rabbit to follow its natural instincts and live a happier life.

Companions

Rabbits like to spend time with other friendly rabbits and can bore quickly if they are left to live on their own.

Many veterinarians recommend keeping at least two rabbits together so they do not become lonely and frustrated. Neutered males and females work well together as do neutered littermates of the same sex.

Unless you intend to grow your rabbit family at an alarming rate, we highly recommend your rabbits be neutered as soon as your vet advises it!

Each rabbit should have its own “hiding space” and be able to separate itself from the other rabbits; so again, your rabbit hutch should provide sufficient space.

Health

Rabbits feel pain just like all other mammals, but they are rarely able to show it.  By studying your rabbits, you can learn what normal behaviour is and what is not, so that you can act quickly in the event that your rabbit is sick.

Prone to infectious diseases, it is vital that you keep your rabbits in hygienic conditions to maintain good health.  Perhaps one of the most common rabbit diseases is dental disease, so their continually growing teeth must be kept at a comfortable length, which is only achievable if they eat the correct diet.

Like our dogs and cats, rabbits are prone to fleas and worms, so should be treated regularly as advised by your vet.

Any changes in your rabbits eating, drinking and sleeping habits should be brought to your vet’s attention immediately.

Rabbits make delightful indoor and outdoor pets, and with the right care and attention, they can live a long and happy life.

We hope you have enjoyed our guide to keeping rabbits, and look forward to hearing any feedback and tips from our readers.

Keeping Rabbits – Part 1.

It is estimated that over 1 million UK citizens now own a rabbit as a family pet.  Coming in just behind Dogs and cats, these delightful creatures are an extremely popular choice due to their friendly nature and sociable qualities.

Looking after a rabbit is not terribly difficult, but you do need to consider their five basic needs for a long and happy life – Environment, Diet, Natural Behaviour, Companions and Health.

Here is the first of our two part series, giving you some of our top tips for keeping a happy, healthy rabbit:

Environment

Rabbits are very energetic animals, they love to move around freely and require plenty of exercise to avoid boredom.

When choosing your rabbit hutch it is recommended that, you choose a hutch large enough for your rabbit to make three or 4 hops across, and one that is high enough for your pet to stand up fully on its back legs.

In addition to your rabbit hutch, you need to provide a safe place for your rabbit to exercise.  Rabbit runs are now widely available and give your rabbit that extra space to stretch their long legs.  Alternatively, if you have an enclosed garden you could let your rabbit out to enjoy some supervised exercise on your lawn.  Your rabbit will love this and your will possibly witness some hilarious scenes as your bunny dashes around in the sun.

Diet

Rabbits are natural grazers, and their diets should be made up of grass and plants.  Commercial rabbit foods and some thoroughly washed root vegetables may also be given in moderation, but hay and grass should be your rabbit’s main dietary source, as they need this for their digestive system to function correctly.

Failure to provide your rabbit with the right food can cause all kinds of health problems, so always consult your vet if you are unsure.

How much your rabbit needs to eat depends on their age, the amount of exercise they receive and the condition of their health, so this should be monitored carefully to prevent your rabbit from becoming overweight.

Of course, a fresh supply of water is essential; we would recommend topping it up twice per day and completely changing it once per day.  If your rabbit lives in a rabbit hutch outside, pay particular attention to their water supply during hot summer days, and cold winter days when it may freeze.

Faunariums, Terrariums and Vivariums.

If you are thinking about getting an exotic pet, you need to do some research.

Beautiful reptiles and amphibians can make wonderful pets but they need the right care, attention and living conditions to survive, so providing them with the correct living environment is critical.

For smaller creatures such as frogs and insects, an all-purpose Faunarium could make a suitable home.  Generally made from transparent plastic, Faunariums are easy to clean, maintain and are cost effective housing solution for very small reptiles, amphibians and arachnids.

Faunarium

This Exo Terra Standard Faunarium, has a transparent door for easy access and a carry handle for transporting.  Measuring 37 x 33 x 24.5cm, this Faunarium is also ideal for temporary housing or quarantine purposes.

For slightly larger exotic pets, we would recommend a Terrarium, such as this Exo Terra Glass Terrarium.  Designed by European Herpetologists, this housing has been specifically designed to meet the needs of reptiles and amphibians.

Terrarium

The Terrarium has two large front opening doors so you can feed your pet and maintain its living environment without disturbing it.

Full screen ventilation allows UBV and Infrared penetration, and the bottom plate is raised ready for substrate and extended ground surface heating. With Dimensions of 90 x 45 x 45cm, this Terrarium is large enough to create a harmonized living space for your exotic pet.

For larger reptiles and amphibians we would highly recommend a Vivarium, such as this VivExotic EX55 Beach Vivarium.

Vivarium

Packed full of features that make it a perfect habitat for reptiles, the Vivariums in the VivExotic collection come complete with an integrated ventilation system, toughened glass doors and easy cable access.

Designed to look like a quality piece of furniture, this Vivarium would make a stunning edition to any room while creating a perfect home for your exotic pet.

Rabbit Hutches, Runs, Covers and Accessories.

If you are one of the million or so British Rabbit owners, then you will know that you need quite a lot of equipment to care for your Rabbit correctly.

A good quality Rabbit Hutch and accessories, a cover for you hutch, and an exercise run are all necessary items that your rabbit or rabbits will need to live a long and happy life.

Fortunately, once you have made this initial investment, upkeep of your rabbits is relatively inexpensive, so if you take the right care of your equipment it will last for the lifetime of your pet.

As a rule, I always recommend choosing the largest rabbit hutch you can afford and that you have space for; Rabbits do not like to be confined in small spaces, they need to be able to move around, lie down and stretch their legs just like we do; restricting their space can cause all kinds of mental and physical problems.

A rabbit hutch combined with an exercise run is ideal, it gives your rabbit the freedom to move around at its leisure and it generally easier to maintain.

Then you need a cover for your hutch, our British weather can be somewhat unpredictable and rabbits feel the cold just as we do, so a good quality hutch cover to protect your pet from the elements is ideal.

An all-in-one package, this 4ft Rabbit Hutch with Run and Cover by Sharples is the perfect investment for any new Rabbit owner.  Made from high quality weatherboarding, with a watertight, felt roof, this large hutch has plenty of indoor space that sits above the exercise run.  Access between the hutch and the run is via a non-slip ramp, so your rabbit is free to move between to the two areas at its leisure.

This hutch also comes with a superior quality rabbit hutch cover, perfect for keeping the hutch dry and warm on rainy days and during the winter months.

The accessories required for your rabbit hutch are:

  • A water bottle
  • Two feeding bowls
  • Fresh bedding such as wood shavings and hay
  • Some toys to stimulate your rabbits mentally and physically

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your Rabbit hutch will ensure it stays in perfect condition, changing the bedding at least once per week and washing the food bowls and water bottles daily will ensure you beautiful new pet will stay fit and healthy.
