pug-375462_1280There is a lot of mystery and speculation surrounding the Pug and its origins, but there is one thing you can be sure of, and that's that Pugs are the UK's most favourite Toy Breed dog. Last year 8,071 pugs were registered in the UK, beating second place, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, by almost 3000; and beating both long and smooth coat Chihuahuas – the third and fourth place – by approximately 5000 & 6000 respectively.

Personality & Training

Pugs have always had something of a reputation amongst dog lovers as being full of personality and spirit, in contrast to its small, unassuming form. Despite their exuberance pugs are rarely vicious or threatening, as they prefer to pour all their energy and will into being playful and satiating their inherent curiosity. These characteristics make pugs the perfect family dog, as they are safe to have around small children and are happy playing with them and keeping them occupied.

Whilst this breed is incredibly energetic and bubbly, they can also be quite docile and are more than happy to lounge around in the evenings; enjoying the company of their family. They are also quite fond of the occasional snooze and will decide that it's nap time at random intervals throughout the day; to ensure they will be well-rested and prepared for action if and when it arises.

All in all, pugs are very intelligent dogs with an especially good nature and laid back temperament. They love to spend time with people, but can also be independent when they deem it necessary. Best of all, these dogs have a long life span compared to a lot other dogs, so it's likely that they will stick around to keep their humans company for quite some time.

Exercise & Living Conditions

Incredibly lively and playful, these dogs love to run around and mess about. They interact well with children and have surprisingly strong, sturdy legs which they enjoy using to jump around and playfully pounce at feet or inanimate objects. When they are engaged in exercise it is fair to say that they put their all into it, there are no half measures when it comes to pugs, but it also means that they soon tire themselves out.

Half an hour of exercise a day is usually enough to keep a pug happy, but a little bit more every now and again is a good way to keep them healthy and active as they get older. If they do not get sufficient exercise then pugs will become lazy and lethargic, leading to weight gain and long bouts of inactivity; resulting in the decline of their health.

Grooming

Not much grooming is required with pugs as their coats are very short and they are not especially prone to playing in the mud or rain. It is probably a good idea however to brush them once a week, to keep them looking neat and tidy; but try not to bath them too often as doing so will remove the natural oils from their skin, resulting in dryness, irritation and discomfort.
